My name is Richard King of Senior One and I currently attend the International Department of Mingde. As a prominent member of several societies and the very class president of K341, I believe it is my duty to be an upstanding leader of my class and my school. My time and energy is solely dedicated to the well-being of my fellow peers both inside the classroom and out. Having stayed in a Western country quite a period of time, I also have a thorough knowledge of Chinese-Western cultural differences and the sub sequential differences of mindsets. Therefore, upon hearing the news concerning the International Headmasters’ Forum Host Competition, I knew it was my very calling.

The steps to becoming the English host, however, was not easy. Having many tasks to accomplish and duties to serve, I don’t have ample amount of time as my piers do. Thus, I have to use all of my break time to my advantage in order to write my speech. The first obstacle to overcome is the preliminary competition. Many people attended, but only few were selected into the final competition. I had the very luck of making through the preliminaries. Quite honestly, I believe there were fellow contestants of far higher skill and rank compared to me. Regardless, confidence and perservence are what are truly at stake here and I believe I have those values. Though I made a rather blatant error during my self-introduction in the prelims, the judges still deemed me worthy to go to the next round. For this, I am also grateful that the judges decided to give me a second chance in order to prove myself.

After a week or so, I attended the final competition. Instead of students presiding as the judges, there were English teachers and administrators overviewing the event. Attending the competition were the best English speakers amongst Mingde, so I felt a great deal of pressure at the beginning. Soon, after soothing remarks from my teachers and peers, I felt confident again and proceed in waiting. When time came to me, I spoke with the loudest, bravest voice, bringing fear into the hearts of my competitors. Then, after all the competitors finished, the teachers announced the results will be given out next week.

When time came, I was honestly surprised I got the spot. It’s not everyday you get this kind of opportunity. I realized after this, it was work time. Since then, I met with the office director and the Chinese Hostess to discuss the event. My fellow host, Yu Langting, is a top-notch student from the Huangxing Class of Senior Two. She brought much professionalism to the table and gave me much support in my endeavor. Mr. Le, the supervising teacher, gave us much advice and support in the process as well. About a week before the forum, we were handed the lines for us to speak at the forum. Due to time constraints, I had to translate the lines myself from Chinese into English. Though it might have been a slight setback, I believe it also made my lines more authentic in a sense. Before the forum, the two of us held several rehearsals until perfection.

At Thursday noon, we were told to walk to the Provincial Hall and make preparations for the forum. To my surprise, however, my mother came to pick us up. She turned to purposefully attend the forum just to see me. I was honored, to say at the least. When time came to, we were almost about to go upon the stage. We changed into fresh new uniforms and rehearsed our lines several times.

And then we stood still. The lights, cameras, audience of unfamiliar faces. All directed at us. We began already quite familiar with our lines and the ordering of the event. The audience was quite impressed by the clarity and power of our voices. Yu Langting had perfect Mandarin while I used my American accent to woo the crowd. Up upon the stage, we showed the capabilities of high school students of Changsha and of China. Amongst the foreign headmasters, we showed proficiency and mastership over language and rhetoric, bending it to our wills. And through the 40 minutes up on the stage, we still managed to keep cool amongst such a prestigious event. After announcing the following host to preside the forum, we left with smiles on our faces and went back to school, where we are immediately greeted by administrators of the school.

Hosting the International Headmasters’ Forum was a dream come true. To be honest, I don’t believe I could have the ability to do so. This event gave me great opportunities to show the fluency of my English and the power of the Chinese Youth. Through these events, we can change the pejorative view of Chinese students amongst the eyes of foreigners. As long we have the courage, nothing is impossible.

‘Everyone can read history, but few can change it.’ This is the very principle that I live and stand by. Today, as I type this essay, I believe I have achieved. However, the road ahead of us is still the an arduous and challenging one. Still, as long as we keep our head up, even the greatest obstacle stands no chance against us.
